Iraqi insurgents strike at Italians
Three Italians were killed yesterday in Iraq, following an explosion that hit a military convoy in southern Iraq Thursday morning, and critically wounded two other Italians. The attack took place in Nasiriya just before 9 a.m. local time. The dead are one army captain and two carabinieri marshals, all in their late 20s, early 30s. The attack made front-page news today in Italy.
The Iraqis seem to be hitting at a time when the recent elections have driven Italy at a political impasse, which looks like being resolved by the formation of a center-left government. The killings could be a push to force the hand of the head of the new government, Romano Prodi, to expedite his pre-election promise to pull out all the troops from Iraq within the year. PS : One Rumanian was also killed. (No apparent message there. He was simply as unlucky as the others.) RAI |
