how come everyone wants to try and give ruth all of the conditions that would make him a worse player (better competion etc.) but none that would make him a better player( even forgetting steroids if he worked out legitimately he surely would have improved as a player)

Even if Bonds is better than Ruth, Ruth still had a much bigger impact on the game than Bonds. Ruth changed the way the whole league played games, Bonds changed the way people pitch to him and not the whole league.

Exactly, everyone went from the Baltimore Chop to trying to hit the long ball. It's not from Honus Wagner or Ty Cobb realizing that OBS is cool.

Bonds >>>>> A-Rod?

Would like to hear the explanation for this one.

Bonds 88-98 132.5WARP3
Arod 96-06 129.5WARP3

Bonds 99-06 85.9WARP3 short season in 99, very short year in 05

Arod has a ways to go, but he has been a beast

What bottomset said. A-rod has a real good chance of passing them both, but he isn't there yet. You brought up Sosa, I responded to Sosa. A-rod is a much better choice than Sosa, but wait about 5-6 years.

Is your point that you expect Ruth to be at the top for the rest of time? Obviously, at some point he will probably be out of the top 10. It should be a long while, though, you might be dead.

Outfield assists is a horrible metric to measure defensive ability.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yea but it's a decent indicator of arm strength and accuracy, which is what I used it for.

I did. But being a Manny fan, I couldn't bring myself to respond. And some of his catch-and-spin sidearm loopers into second to nail guys trying to stretch wall-ball liners are actually kind of impressive, even if the technique looks a little unorthodox. And I still remember him leaping over the fence in Yankee Stadium to rob a sure home run a few years ago, a play in which he looked like a genuinely athletic outfielder.

But kudos anyway, especially for the photo choice.

Thayer,

I don't get it. Manny has a cannon for an arm, one of the best in the bigs. And fields like a retard. Isn't this obvious?

Getting this thread slightly back on topic. Is Griffey a selfish prick for not participating in the HRD?

No.

I can see where the OP is coming from, though. The ASG is a pageant, a treat for the fans. It's good for baseball if it's a big deal and people pay attention, and it's good for the fans if it's interesting. Normally it's totally fine for the best players to opt out of the game or the Derby because it wouldn't make that much difference to fan enjoyment or interest, but Bonds in the '07 Derby, when he's about to break the all-time record, in his home park, should be just too cool to pass up -- I would have watched, and I almost never catch the Derby.

Similarly, when Jose Reyes gets to 1B in the ASG, he should need a good reason not to try and steal second. It's a close EV decision, it's what everyone wants to see, so let's have some fun.

Varloz, that is the point I was trying to make, but you made it better than I did, without coming off like a c@ck.

Anyway, I wish MLB and NBA would institute a rule that if you are selected for the home run derby/three-point contest/slam-dunk contest, you must do it or you won't be allowed to play in the all-star game itself.

The NFL Pro Bowl is just dumb and should be eliminated. Name the teams, but don't play the game.
