Default Re: How to add larger denominations earlier in a tourney

As the TD I add the larger chips into play whenever I get the chance. I start with 5, 25 and 100. At the end of round 3 the reds come off. Typically they're colored up to greens (25) and blacks (100) but if someone has a lot they might get a purple (500). The next color up isn't for another 6-7 rounds when the greens come off. But as players get eliminated the chips get consolidated and the blinds rise so there is less need for the greens. Throughout the rounds and during breaks I will pull greens and blacks from players and color up to purples or even yellows (1,000). I really don't have any set times where a color is introduced. And as already mentioned you need to make sure you don't pull too many as then players constantly need to make change for each other.

And, Since I agree with this so strongly I have mention it once again in this thread. Having a 5, 10, then 25 or 25, 50, 100 is just plain wrong.

Just go ahead and exchange for higher denominations when it's convenient. I do it when chipping up or on breaks, and sometimes during play. Nothing more annoying than someone counting out big stacks of small denomination chips whenever they make a big bet or all in.

i myself feel that too many colors to start with is confusing..a 5 and 10 chip, thats just dumb..i used to do a T1500 tourneys with 5/10 blinds..but now I start my blinds at 25/50,,and start with 25-100-500 and add a few 1000 chips to get what ever starting point makes you happy..2500,,3500 5000.......you have 4 colors to start,,but usually only 1-3 of the highest denominatio,,ie. 1000 to start....then when you play the betting is easier because it will be by 50s and 100's,,,when you throw out one $1000 chip, its kinda of cool and intimidating, then when you color up, by the time the final table comes around you may only need 500's and 1000s....maybe a 5000.....at 30 people at $750 is $22500 chips in play..final table of 10..avg. stack is only $2200..thats 22 black chips...you wont need a 500...raise the starting chips and adjust the blinds to suit.........

I convinced my buddy to go to 5,25,100,500 with a 2000 starting stack and blinds starting at 5/10.
I don't think we'll need to get the 1000 or higher chips in play at all.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

You can always color out the pot too, but who wants chips that large in play early on anyways?

Well in the end we had 10 less players show up than RSVP'd (don't ask), but the structure was excellent. We went with the 2000 starting stacks and extremely low blinds 5/10 to start with 30 minute levels for the first hour and 15 min after that. There was much opportunity for play and fun was had by all.

Thanks again for everyone's help.
