Re: Obvious African scam, right?
Like the others pointed out this surely is a scam.
But I can somehow understand the feelings of your mom's co-worker. So I think there are 2 options: 1. ignore it (might be very hard for her and bug her for a long time) 2. travel there immediatly and check it out herself. It won't cost her more than the 3k in question. Paying is obviously not an option, because there will be more money requests comming soon, and then it's getting really ugly. |

Re: Obvious African scam, right?
It's a scam, obviously. Mom's friend should investigate, because she can't just ignore it. I don't know how you find out that the hospital is not legit, and if it is legit there is no Spanish guy there who has been shot on his way from the bank. Maybe the American embassy can be helpful, or maybe a PI?

Re: Obvious African scam, right?
Man, it's so hard to tell. We need somone reputable to help us decide whether or not this is a scam. Someone like Idi the Nigerian, perhaps.

Re: Obvious African scam, right?
Scam, I saw a Dr. Phil episode once where they exposed almost the exact same modus operandi.
Country might be Ghana if it starts with a G. |

Re: Obvious African scam, right?
Get the Spaniard to take a picture of himself holding a whole, dead fish on his head. If he does, it's legit. Send money ASAP.

Re: Obvious African scam, right?
How can anyone with any common sense not immediately see through this? I guess lovesick people do really really stupid things sometimes. Maybe your Mom's friend just needs to send the money to know for sure.

[ QUOTE ]
[/ QUOTE ] My friend, I will happily hold the $3000 for your mom's friend while I investigate the Spaniard in question. If he is indeed hospitalized, I will transfer the money to him forthwith. As luck would have it, it has long been my dream to travel to each African country which starts with the letter G. Aiding your mother's friend will give me the impetus to make my dream a reality. Your friend, Idi |

Re: Obvious African scam, right?
I really think when people send money to these scams they deserve to lose their money. If your that dumb then oh well.

Re: Obvious African scam, right?
Definitely a scam. You are right. Do what you can to stop her, but ultimately it is up to her. I just did a little web search and found this: http://www.internet-love-scams.org/f...ead.php?t=2171 |

Re: Obvious African scam, right?
Por favor, lock this thread. I am almost certain that I have been shot in or near a bank and am in a hospital in an African country whose name begins with G. If you send me $3,000 American I will pay you back as soon as I am well and have married my American or European girlfriend (I don't know which as we have only been in contact on the intertubes). If you don't send me the money I may die (ay caramba!) or disappear from her life (sad, no?) Gracias.
