Default I\'ve Got Mumps

I went to the doctor today thinking I had strep throat because my roomate has had it.

I told the doctor I believe I have strep throat. After about 4 seconds of examination, the doctor (at the university student health center) told me "you have mumps. You're actually the first patient I've personally treated this summer, but there have been a couple people per week". She then let me know there's nothing I can do other than feel like [censored] for up to 10 days.

She then gave me some surgeon masks to cover up my disease spreading mouth and nose. On the way out, I was able to stop at a desk with a sign that said "Mumps Patient Checkout," where I was entered into a database for the recent mumps outbreak.

You can usually tell if you have mumps if you look anything like this:

My neck isn't too bad, but certainly noticeable. I have had the MMR vaccine twice in my life. I'm at my parent's house now in quarantine for a week. Currently, I have flu-like symptoms and a sore neck. Worse case, my testicles could swell. In very rare cases, men with mumps can become sterile, although it's usually with old people.

Anyway, my monitors are going next to my bed and I'll play poker all week.

For anyone who is in college, getting the vaccine again might not be a bad idea.

Isn't the mumps vaccine in the tetnus shot? Mumps/rubella/tetnus?

Is the vaccine not effective? Or a new strain? Did the doctor expand on anything?

You look young for college, but type well for what must be little fingers. Get better soon.

I believe Tetanus is separate. The MMR shot stands for Measles/Mumps/Rubella.

Ahh, thank you on the MMR. Is tetnus DTP? diptheria/tetnus/polio?

The vaccine was/is believed to be 95% (or more) effective. It is possible that the vaccine (or certain batches) isn't as effective. In the 50's and 60's there were a hundred thousand cases a year of mumps. Until the vacccine, it was like the chicken pox.

The general response is to encourage everyone to make sure they've had the vaccine twice. Well, everyone who goes to my school (Kansas) must have had the vaccine twice to enroll. It has mainly been students coming down with the mumps. As I said, there was a desk dedicated for "Mumps Patient Check-Out" at the university health center.

No one should be worried. There have been 5000 cases throughout the midwest. It just sucks staying quarantined for 8 days. I haven't enjoyed the thought of my testicle(s) becoming sore and enlarged.

I had the MMR vaccines, but I had the mumps when I was about 3 or 4, on Thanksgiving nonetheless. That SUCKED.

Feel better, man.

I had the Mumps in February. Like you I've been vaccinated twice.

Luckily I had an EXTREMELY mild case (slight headache, tender throat). This meant that 1) I didn't have to go to my crappy job for four days; and 2) I stayed on my butt and watched movies all day and played poker all evening.

If I could arrange to get the Mumps in that fashion once a year, I absolutely would.

P.S. I think that it was pretty cool to have an incredibly contagious disease prefaced by an article. Saying "I've got "THE Mumps"' beats the hell out of saying 'I've got indigestion'.
