72-0 in the 1st Quarter, HS game--and they weren\'t trying to run it up
espn.com story
72-0, 30 seconds left in the opening quarter. Fifteen running plays, one pass. Six turnovers, one returned for a TD. When it hit 83-0, the coach ordered his players to stay out of the endzone. Fall down on the five-yard-line, if necessary, and that happened twice! I only posted this for the people who shared my reaction: "72-0 in the first quarter? What a jerk!" (Got banned from OOT after 12 years, now I feel the need to explain why I start threads.) |

Helping Smith Center's cause -- at least, as soon as the cause became a way to stop the madness -- was a Kansas mercy rule that allows the clock to run continuously once there is a 40-point margin between two teams. [/ QUOTE ] Also: [ QUOTE ] The Redmen are currently on a 50-game winning streak, and this year they've outscored their nine opponents by an average margin of 71-0 and a total score of 640-0. They have yet to punt. [/ QUOTE ] Sounds like a lot of fun [Zzzzz] |

If we put in a mercy rule it's only going to shame these kids getting beat more. What we need to do is let them take their lumps like men and they'll be better for it. Cody |

In Iowa they have a 50 point rule where the game ends if one team is up 50 at the half, thought this was standard.
I don't like it though, blowouts give the 2nd/3rd team guys a chance to play. |
