Default FF & IE Freezing

Really out of nowhere Firefox started periodically freezing. About every twenty seconds it will completely freeze up and I cannot click anything and I'm just stuck staring at whatever is currently in the browser window. It will then unfreeze after about 5 seconds and everything is back to normal. So far this cycle seems to be pretty consistent.

I tried using IE and it did the same thing. No other programs are having any problems. I even did a system restore back a couple of days to a where I know this wasn't happening and for some reason it was no help at all.

I Googled around a bit and really everything came up blank.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Its hard to really diagnose it from just what you said. But it sounds like you have something that is hogging resources and therefore slowing down or freezing anything that you are trying to do. Look through your running processes next time this happens, and see what is taking up the most memory or the most cpu. If your still having problems, download hijackthis and post your log here and i will take a look.

Task Manager should be your first stop. See what's getting bogged down. Post a screenshot if u know how. If nothing is there then it will be a little more difficult. Have you installed any apps or hardware in the past few days or weeks? One of the most common resaons for this is an application conflict which can be very hard to determine.

Not sure if anything is hogging resources. Like I said I did the system restore then I ended any unimportant processes from the task manager and still had problems. Right now in the task manager FF is using the most memory at about 45,000K. Here is the log file from HiJackThis. Again, thanks for your time.

You're not looking for IE or FF hogging resources necc. You're looking for something else that's causing it. Turn the update speed to high and watch your CPU and page file usage at the exact time the freeze occurs.

Your not showing any indication of any viruses or anything malicious. You can remove the entires that show (no file) or (file missing) but thats just cleanup.

It may be something to do with your symantec software... Theres a couple of things you can try:
1) Updating windows at windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ in case of some sort of driver or corruption issue
2) Removing your Symantec software and see if the problem reoccurs
3) Completely uninstall firefox and all of your addons first, and seeing if the problem still exists with firefox.

Also, how often does this problem occur?

EDIT: What i meant in my first post was what the poster above just said, your looking for something else hogging resources that is stalling your browser. What he said you should do, watch the task manager (sorted by cpu and then sorted by memory) and see what happens when your problem occurs. Its likely that something will go to 99 percent cpu usage when the problem occurs, or memory will shoot up or something. Check and see what happens in task manager when the problem occurs.

Went with the windows update and removing the Symantec software (didn't use it anyway) and everything seems to be working as it did before (if not better).

Thanks a lot for the help guys.

PS - Just in case you were curious - I set the update speed to high and watched what happened during the freezes and the only thing that jumped was FF. I'm thinking the Symantec software had something to do with it. IIRC it ran a liveupdate around the same time the problem started occuring.
