Another tip for regular weekends. If you are returning to LA Sunday, do NOT leave right after checkout ~1-4pm. I always chill for a while and go back around 6 or 7pm. I once left at 6, got back at 10pm, and called a group who were there witb us that left around 2. They got back at 830.

Hero nails this one perfectly!! When coming back home to SoCal on a Sunday, I never leave Vegas during that window from 10am to 5pm. The road back is just brutal. Either leave at the crack of dawn or after dinner. Or better yet, come home on Monday.

Thanks a lot for the thoughts. As far as typical weekends go, I know now never to leave Friday afternoon-early evening to LV. Absolutely brutal traffic, which is worse when it's hot outside and the car can overheat with the A/C on. And I try to avoid leaving on Sundays altogether -- have run into bad spots, even leaving later in the day.

Tejon Pass is on the 5. Not even close to Las Vegas, NV or New Mexico!

Raton pass is on I25 in Southern Colorado, into New Mexico. Can get very nasty this time of the year.

I suspect the traffic back to LA on Sunday is going to be horrendous! I couldn't find parking in the Wynn garage last night. Had to wait for someone to leave, on the roof, before I could get in, and got dropped from the list to boot.

There are lots and lots of cars with Cali plates. Absolutely the pits. LA sends it's worst drivers over here. They identify them by putting a sign on the back. It says CALIFORNIA on it.

And it's pretty close to Las Vegas (New Mexico).

I usually leave on Friday before 1pm or after 11pm.

For returns I either come back sunday at 8am or not until 9-10pm.

I never hit any traffic during these times and cruise at about 85mph so with no stops it only takes me 3hr 45min from LA door to door.
