He isn't THAT bad. He has definitely had a disappointing season. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, he's that bad. He is incredibly inefficient, is always in the top three in Pitcher Abuse Points, walks way too many batters, gives up way too many home runs, and his strikeout rate has fallen every year along with his velocity. Does that sound like a guy you give a 7 year deal to? He benefited from a sick defense in Oakland and all the foul ground there. |

Re: Who is the Biggest Dissapoint in Baseball?
Zito's QERA is:
(2.69+K%*(-3.4)+BB%*3.88+GB%*(-0.66))^2 (2.69+0.1486*(-3.4)+0.1066*3.88+0.42*(-0.66) ^ 2 (2.69-0.505+0.414-0.277) ^ 2 2.322 ^ 2 5.39 His actual ERA? 5.13. So, by some measure, he is in fact worse than he appears to be this year. Enjoy! |

Just meant that I would have expected him to manage an ERA in the low 4s in the NL West. |

[/ QUOTE ] Actually, many expected him to perform about as well as he did in Oakland because AT&T Park may be the most severe pitchers' park in the game, presumably lowering his HRs, and facing much weaker NL lineups would also help. That was a perfectly rational line of thought; he's been worse than anyone could've expected, really. Noah Lowry's perfect proof. You would've taken Lowry over Zito this season? Because Lowry's been helped a ton by his situation, and Zito is a better pitcher than he in the exact same situation. |

Also SF has a pretty good defense, almost as good as Oak I bet.

Re: Who is the Biggest Dissapoint in Baseball?
[ QUOTE ]
AT&T Park may be the most severe pitchers' park in the game [/ QUOTE ] ? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor 18 AT&T Park (San Francisco, California) 0.989 30 McAfee Coliseum (Oakland, California) 0.816 Home runs go down in AT&T, but extra base hits increase, as do hits in general. Regardless, McAfee is the most severe pitcher's park this year. You can go back several years and see that AT&T is about neutral to slightly advantageous for the pitcher. It's definitely not a severe pitcher's park with the exception of left-handed batters having a disadvantage. I never argued that Noah Lowry was an excellent pitcher. He, too, walks too many batters and strikes out too few. However, his PAP3 is a lot lower. Barry Zito flat out isn't good, and everyone in their right mind knew this. |
