Interested in making a digital slide show

This could go into computer tech help, but I'll try it here first...

I'm interested in making a digital slide show, with background music, that I can either send to someone as a file that runs on its own, or possibly upload it YouTube. I've never used software that does this, and have no idea where to start.

Help? Recommendations for (preferably free) software, etc.?

I know there are some sites that create slideshows that you can add to myspace profiles, but I'm not looking to add one to a profile.
