Default 3:10 to Yuma

Went to the movies tonight and practically [censored] myself when I saw this poster:

Now I can't WAIT to see this, as 3:10 to Yuma was an awesome film, and with Russell Crow and Christian Bale, I am fully expecting this remake to rock and stuff.

Also has Gretchen Mol, hot. From The Notorious Bettie Page:

(couldn't resist throwing that in; I am a HUGE Bettie Page fan; I pretty much married my first wife because she looked just like Bettie Page).

In any event, I can't remember the last good western to come out. Maybe Open Range in 2003, and it was just okay, not great. I am very stoked about this. As we have talked about in the past, I am NOT one of those people that thinks remakes of great movies are inherently terrible, even if they are not as good as the originals. A good Hollywood remake can bring a story to tens of millions of new viewers who never would have heard of it otherwise, and might just get some fraction of them to check out the original:

3:10 to Yuma (1957) starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin

3:10 to Yuma is the story of an outlaw waiting to be taken by train to a date with the hangman. A local rancher has agreed to hold the prisoner until the train comes. A tense plot unfolds slowly as the outlaw plays mind games with the rancher.

I fully expect the plodding plot to get a little Hollywood action treatment, but that's ok.

One short month away, and I cannot WAIT.

I love westerns. I'm not sure why. I too am really looking forward to this one. Two great actors, although when I think "western" those aren't the first two names that come to mind; Crowe was in The Quick and the Dead.

The western has been a staple of American films since the early 1900s. French films were dominating the market and American filmmakers discovered the Indian as a solution to their economic problem.

I guess Clint Eastwood will be the last western star ever.

I saw the remake of 'Flight of the Phoenix' on TV last night.

wtf was the point of that? Everything and everybody looked exactly the same. The plane looked exactly the same. Only difference is that Dennis Quaid, though I like him, ain't no Jimmy Stewart. Complete waste of time.

And how many tens of millions of people got to see the story who would never hace seen the original.

Anti-remake snobbery annoys me.

Does it really? I thought the trailer looked OK, sans the cheesy aspect of Bale's son tagging along - but Mangold is an extremely mediocre director.

In Walk the Line, he managed to take a great cast and great source material and make it stale (but watchable).
