"There has been a great deal of study in this area. Perhaps you might consider studying the positive effects of gamboling. The purpose of research is after all to discover something new, no?"

Thanks, this is an interesting point, but although there is existing research into problem gambling, I can't agree with the sentiment that there is nothing new to find out. Internet gambling, in particular, is a relatively new field of research, and there is still a clear need for better understanding of the characteristics of people who gamble online (with and without problems).

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree that there are certainly new things to discover in the area you're researching. I guess I just see it as a "safe" area of study. I don't think you're going to come to any bold or revolutionary conclusions. Just different perspectives I suppose. Being successful in poker is, to a large extent, about doing things others aren't.

As for the sets of questions that we are using to ask about gambling-related problems, these are validated instruments that have been used in numerous large-scale studies [ on gambling-related problems? ] ... However, the point that there should be an opportunity for people to report positive feelings about gambling is an interesting one that I will take into consideration.

This entire paragraph hints strongly to me that you started this Survey from the position that you believed gambling causes problems, and you had no awareness that some gambling, (e.g. winning by skilled poker-playing), had any positive aspects.

If that is the case, then obviously the phrasing of the questions will be biased towards the problems, and a major restructure should not only be considered, but put into effect, before you go mainstream.

What a joke. First thing I saw was this:

THERE MAY BE A FLAW IN YOUR CUNNING PLAN

I'm not going to read this thread fully, but why the hell do the first two questions start with "how often do you spend money"?

As worded I am incapable of truthfully answering your survey questions. Sorry. Perhaps your questions should come with instructions. Do you even know what you mean by "spend money"?

As researchers, wouldn't you of done some "research" regarding the topic? How do you release a survey on the twoplustwo forums grouping poker in with slot machines? I think you should reevaluate the situation and come back when you are knowledgable on the topic.

Those who are ignorant towards the game of poker group it in with casino games, and thats simply ridiculous. If you wish to group poker with other investments, look towards the stock market and real estate market. Both markets require an "education" so to speak, in order to make profitable investments. Furthmore both markets feature a form of variance related to the economy. Profitable poker players "invest" money, they dont spend it. I think you should take some time to understand poker and then come back with a more professional survey.

This seems like a trap. She is probably one of those ultra-christian zealots trying to muck up more flawed data about how damaging online gambling is to the safety of our children.

Hey, they are giving away 6 ipods though. I Wonder what the EV is on this thing then?

The problem here is that the questions in this survey are basically non-applicable to the majority of the people on this particular site. Some of these questions are like asking a baseball player how many touchdowns they have scored in the past year. I couldn't answer if I tried. But again, that is because I do not "gamble", not in the manner you are addressing.

I can't get past the "What is your yearly income" question- it won't accept my answer.
