here's 3k 20 years 10% compounded interest. would u force your kid to put his money in an index fund (QQQQ) or would u let him waste it on cards?

I'd let him be a kid and waste it on baseball cards and music. If my 10 year old by some freak nature is aware of and has an interest in investing in index funds, they can have at it I guess.

If it came out of his allowance, I'd let the kid buy most anything he wanted. But it's hard for me to picture giving a kid an allowance that allowed him to spend thousands of dollars on stuff in any reasonable period of time. I'm not into conspicuous consumption in general, but think it's especially dopey for kids to have huge allowances.

I'm now 22, from 13 to 17 i spent AT LEAST $2000 of my part job money on "band equipment", consisting of around 5-7 junk guitars that i couldn't live without then, and the 4 amplifier systems i went through as a result of trade in's and buying slightly better models. My "band" and i were averaging about $200 a week at our local music store for a whole summer.

I dont regret spending it all on band equipment, but i just wish i could have saved some money then so i would have a sick Les Paul or something now.

The best part of this is: I never even got any good til i stopped buying gear and stopped playing with my "band".

One may now consider it a waste to have spent thousands on RC cars or Magic cards, etc. But you if you had fun, why is it a waste.

George Michael: Quicken! Premiere! Dad, I hope you kept the receipt.
Michael: You want to return that?
George Michael: What? No, I want to deduct it.

Jordan's and other expensive shoes.

Basketball Jerseys (bought an authentic Shawn Kemp jersey to actually wear)

Sports cards that I thought I was gonna retire on.

Now I waste huge amounts of money on DVD's.
