Re: Stiffing
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] the alternative is paying more in food costs, and getting very [censored] service. [/ QUOTE ] No, it's not. Prices and wages are reasonable, and service is OK, in countries without retarded tipping culture (which is pretty much the whole western world except the US). That said, the culture being there in the US, not tipping at all is despicable if service is anything else than horrible. [/ QUOTE ] My experience is limited to the UK and the US, but restaurant service, food and prices are VASTLY superior in the US. Most people in the UK that had traveled here agreed. I assume this is because of our tipping culture. I had some very bad experiences in expensive places in the UK. [/ QUOTE ] Everything in the UK is crazy expensive, not just restaurants/bars. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, but why is the service so terrible? |

Re: Stiffing
Lets say you're at a college bar and its dollar drinks and you are consistently getting one drink at time during the night. Still tip a dollar every time?

[ QUOTE ] if you're going to a bar just because they have $1 drinks, you're not going to be paying $2/drink. [/ QUOTE ] I don't understand. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah I don't get it either, but from what I've noticed about stinkypete he's the very definition of baller and he shouldn't expect his tip chart to be universal. Bottom line is tip should be for the EFFORT made. The cost is far less relevant. If I order a $125 bottle of Dom (been awhile, that's what they used to cost at bars here like ~10 years ago, I'm sure it's gone up) am I really expected to tip $50 to have it uncorked and presented to me with some glasses? Hell no. The effort would probably earn a $10 tip, slightly inflated since I'm already spending like a damned fool, but if I got a dirty look because I didn't tip a $20 because of what's inside the bottle then I would be pissed. But it would kind of depend on the actual cost - for example if it was $125 and I had $140 in cash on me of course I wouldn't ask for $5 back. It seems that some people in this thread seem to forget that sometimes tips are affected by the amount of change we're left with after we've paid for something. |

Cabbies in vegas are by far the biggest jerks in the world when it comes to hustling tips. [/ QUOTE ] yes, they are jerks. if your fare is $7.60 and you make it an even $10 you usually don't even get a thank you. if it's something like $6 and you ask for change for your ten you usually get a look of disappointment and a shake of hte head. i once had a cabbie who pretended not to know what the "north entrance" of bellagio was. i was heading there from the rio and he insisted that he thought the main entrance was the north entrance after driving by. i told him that it's fine, i only have $8, and its all he's getting (which was true, but i may have said the same thing if it wasn't). he then asked me if i wanted to get out on the strip by the fountains. the meter was at about $7 at this point, so i obviously understood why he wanted to let me out. i told him i wanted to go to the bellagio. he asked me again if i wanted to get out. i said fine, and handed him an even $7. he bitched and moaned because i had told him i would give him $8. i told him that was before he tried to scam me, and then he told me to [censored] off. if i had been smart i would have ripped up the dollar bill while he watched. las vegas cabbies are scumbags. |
