5/10 Live, Flop top pair out of bb
Hey guys, really basic hand checkup:
Live 5/10 NL at Flagler's in Miami, max buyin 100 (LOL Florida State Law), I just sat down recently, have 130. Almost everyone covers. Reads: Table is unusually passive pf, seems fairly passive postflop as well. Everyone thinks I am a nitty college kid, since I folded the first four hands I was dealt and speak less than fluent Spanish. Only hand I played I raised to 50 after a couple limpers and everyone folded. Hand: I am dealt K2o in the bb. Five limpers, I check. No specific reads on the limpers. Flop K84 2 clubs. Small blind checks. My action? |

Re: 5/10 Live, Flop top pair out of bb
Depends a little bit on your goal here, but almost always c/f here. Any decent size bet commits you. What calls that you are ahead of? A starge combo-draw?
Somehow I imageine you sat at a table where everyone has bought in 10x each and stacks are getting higher and you are trying to catch up. If so, then you probably wanted to push and just re-bought when you lost. I wouldn't recommend it, but I can see the game being played that way. Next time just look for a smaller game so you have at least a little room for play after the flop. |

With all due respect, you clearly didn't properly read the OP. . . the *max buyin* is 100, so everybody bought in for that amount. I wasn't trying to use some absurd doubling system either, I'm just asking about the correct way to play top pair in that situation. . .
I don't know if you play live, but bets will top pair will be called by *lots* of funny holding in many situations. (NOTE: This was a reply to walker, not Albert). |

I can sympathize with strange gambling laws. I live in WA, home of the $500 max bet. I generally play $3/5 NL with a $300 max buy-in, and I know how the capped buy-in affects the game at that spread. I have often had a $2k+ stack in a game where people can only re-buy for $300. Some people will take the approach I mentioned and get crazy reckless trying to build a stack to "compete." They often get into the game for $1200-1500 just trying to get a stack built up. (beautiful situation by the way.) I was just guessing that people do the same thing in the FL games. I am pretty much an exclusively live player and I know what range people are likely to be in this hand with. If I am short stacked in the BB and catch TPNK in a 6-handed pot, I will c/f. What is the best play you see? Bet $20-30 praying that any draws don't realize they are priced in and that no-one else has a K/set/two pr and raises you off of your hand? Even if you get a caller or two you almost have to shove any turn card. Just not a good spot to be in IMO. Just c/f this and wait till you have a better hand in a better spot. Shouldn't take long at all. Edit: Sorry if this (or my first post) reads as an attitude post, not intended that way, just tired and trying to give some advice. I really would try to find a $1-2 or $2-4 game with a $100 max buy-in. That way you at least have a little room to outplay people and win more money with less gambling involved. |

Interesting; thanks very much for clarifying. Sorry for jumping on your initial reply, I just thought you were lumping me in with the morons who get hopelessly stuck trying to "compete" with the big stacks.
Good to have a live player tell me his play in a corresponding situation, thanks for posting. |

Re: 5/10 Live, Flop top pair out of bb
There is no other option to play. Most players just follow the rules and play with the $100 and leave if the win a couple hundred.
I would CRAI because in my experiences most $100 stack players would bet with a 4 or an 8 or some pair and by then the pot is worthwhile to go after.. If its checked around bet any non-ace turn. Pretty sure this is for value against bad live Florida players. |
