Default Re: STTF SNG->cash thread

[ QUOTE ]
here's a chat K䲰䮥n and I had about the t9 decision on the flop and how to use pokerstove:

[10:01] Karpanen2: hi, where do i put stack sizes?
[10:01] auJOZ: you don't
[10:01] auJOZ: it tells you what your equity is
[10:01] auJOZ: then, you look at what you're required to call
[10:01] Karpanen2: ah
[10:01] Karpanen2: i though this was like SNGPT
[10:01] auJOZ: eg, if you're required to put $10 into a pot
[10:01] auJOZ: and it is $30
[10:02] auJOZ: you want more than 25% equity
[10:02] auJOZ: 'cause 10 / ($30 + $10) = 25%
[10:03] auJOZ: in that example
[10:03] auJOZ: your starting stack was $114.25, minus $3 preflop, minus $19.50 on flop
[10:03] auJOZ: so you're calling $91.75 more
[10:03] auJOZ: when you're facing that decision
<snipped K䲰䮥n's bad maths>
[10:06] auJOZ: the pot is $6.50 pf, plus your 19.50 on flop, plus villain's 19.50 on flop, plus 91.75 more (effectively)
[10:06] auJOZ: so, $137.25
[10:07] auJOZ: so, you need more than 91.75 / (137.25 + 91.75) = 91.75/229 = 40% equity
[10:08] auJOZ: your outs are essentially 9 spades and 3 jacks
[10:08] auJOZ: = 12 outs twice
[10:08] auJOZ: which, off the top of my head, is around 45% equity
[10:09] auJOZ: (easy trick: number of outs * 4, rounded down a little, is about equal to your equity on the flop)
[10:09] auJOZ: number of outs * 2 = equity with one card to come
[10:09] Karpanen2: ah nice!
[10:09] auJOZ: of course, if villain is on a flush draw
[10:10] auJOZ: eg, AQss
[10:10] auJOZ: then you lose the flush outs
[10:10] auJOZ: but gain pair outs
[10:10] Karpanen2: so how do i fill in villains hand?
[10:10] auJOZ: i don't have pokerstove here with me
[10:10] auJOZ: but i guess you just type in his estimated range
[10:10] auJOZ: in this case, it's probably easier to do it this way
[10:11] auJOZ: since you're almost certainly behind currently, and you need to hit your outs to win
[10:11] auJOZ: pokerstove is more useful when you have a situation where you might be ahead

[/ QUOTE ]

Bigger flush and straight draws are definitely part of villain's range which is why I think you do not have enough equity to call*.

* - I havent run this through poker stove but dont you think when he bets so big that big draws are highly likely?

Also, while it may be true that calling with the good odds might not be bad, it can put you in some very difficult spots post flop, like this one for example. When you are unsure of a lot of things in your game (as I am frequently), you should try to put yourself in less difficult spots. Calling T9s vs a raise preflop is asking to be put to a tough postflop decision.
