Default stupid soccer offside argument

player is in offside position. the other team plays the ball back and he gains posession.

the other team played the ball by

a)miskick/shank
b)intentional passback (ie the ball was intended for the goalie but he stole it before the keeper got to it)
c)deflection (ie his own team played the ball initially but it deflected back to him off his opponents)

which situation(s) is he offside?

Dump the offside rule. Americans don't understand it. Offsides keep the scores low.
Use the hockey offside rule. Put in a blue line across the field.

Yep. The pass has got to be from his own team to be offside. C isn't because the pass initially came from his side and he was in an offside position at the time.

a)miskick/shank

[/ QUOTE ]

The short answer here is no but technically it depends.

Say A1 passes to A2 who is in the offside position. If B1 shanks it and it goes to A2 then it depends on the whether the referee feels that B1 played the ball or just touched it (which I guess depends on your definition of shank). If A1 hit the ball hard and B1 swiped at it and barely made contact and didn't change the trajectory much it would be called 100% of the time. If A1 passes to A2 down the line, B1 shanks it and it goes across the field to A3 then it shouldn't be called.

If B1 passes to B2 and B2 shanks it to A1 who is in the offside position there is no offence. Similarly if B dribbles then shanks it.

b)intentional passback (ie the ball was intended for the goalie but he stole it before the keeper got to it)

[/ QUOTE ]

No call.

[ QUOTE ]

c)deflection (ie his own team played the ball initially but it deflected back to him off his opponents)

[/ QUOTE ]

This should be called every time.
