I like the question:

Will people be able to sustain life on other planets (other solar systems?) before becoming extinct. After all, that is the key to our indefinite survival... as long as the universe doesn't collapse on itself of course.

I believe scientists estimated some type of incurable virus as the most probable thing that could lead to our extinction. Of course there are TONS of other ways for us to die. My favorite is a gamma ray burst from space traveling faster than the speed of light that instantly kills everything. We wouldn't even see it coming.

Maybe "long term survival" would be the best phrase to use here. Even in the very best scenario, the 2nd law will eventually kick all our asses.

Will Phil Hellmuth still be the undisputed greatest poker player of all time in the year 3000?

Oh, Don't worry about that either. The AC Multivac is already working on it.

very interesting thread.

I think we will reach the year 3000, but our standard of life would be much worse, and population way down.

I think the major problem is this. the whole thing is like a prisoner's dilemma in the sense that nobody (individual, corporations, nations) is really willing to give up the short-term economic gain to create a sustainable world in the long run. it's human nature to not to change ways until we actually feel the pain/threatened and unfortunately it'll probably too late by then.

I realized this while reading a book by some backpacker that likes to travel all the non-touristy areas of the world (ie: deserts/ mountainous reasons etc) and how these "uncivilized" people do a 1000x better job than us at living an environmentally sustainable life style.

Surely advances in technology, the industrial revolution has done us good, but it's a tough question to answer whether or not it has done us more good than bad.
