Being spied on at work?
When I first started my job I had a desktop that had VNC Viewer on in and I was basically told that they could see what's on my monitor anytime they want. Ok no bigge.
Last year I was given a laptop mostly for travel purposes but eventually it became my only computer. I had VNC installed on it so I can access my desktop from over seas but I actually have to run VNC for it to load. The connection I use to connect to my network at the office is a wireless connection, is it at all possible for them to see what I'm doing just because I use a wireless connection? |

Re: Being spied on at work?
Yes, the type of connection has very little to do with them being able to monitor your work habits or web sites. It's there machine you have zero expectation of privacy when using it. Get a cheap laptop of your own for the porn and poker.

If it's not the connection do you have any idea what they can be using?

[/ QUOTE ] Isn't the wireless provided by the office? If it's their router sending the signal, then of course they'll be able to monitor that signal. |

Yes it's their router. When you say monitor the signal do you mean they can see if I'm going on web sites or they can actually see what's on my screen?
I'm not worried that I'm doing anything wrong. I mean I do browse 2+2 every now and then but nothing excessive, it would just be nice to know. |

Re: Being spied on at work?
As was said before the method you use to connect to the network is irrelevant.
We don't use screen cap software at my work but we definitely see EVERY site you surf to. Note: We don't care where you go. Just don't hog bandwidth is our concern here in the NOC. However, if the powers that be decide it's time for you to go your surfing log makes a nice start to the paper trail against you. |

Re: Being spied on at work?
different laws in different countries will determine whether this sort of thing is permissable.
for example, i vaguely remember australian industrial relations comissions cases that established: a) there's a test of whether something is "reasonable" - eg, it is reasonable to use the work phone to call home and say you'll be home late, and the same test should apply to it equipment and b) whether the employee has a reasonable expectation of privacy - just as many employers are not permitted to install a camera in some locations, electronic monitoring is also limited (this is not legal advice; got see an expert if you're concerned about this in further depth) |

Re: Being spied on at work?
When VNC is runnning they can see you, when it's off you're fine. Excluding all your logs, etc. If the wireless connection you are using isn't on their network then it's like normal surfing. When you turn on a VNC or VPN then you can be monitored.
