as others have said, you're probably going to like carrboro better than chapel hill. that whole area has an amazing music scene, cat's cradle/local 506/etc

ross grady has posted a weekly list of stuff going on in the triangle area for many years. very good list if you are into the rock.

Thanks for all the advice so far guys. We're thinking about making another trip down this weekend to look at housing options. Someone suggested -not- going the apartment route, because apparently they'e not so nice.

Any idea how easy it is to find house rentals, and what's the best way to go about that? I've been looking through CraigsList and it seems mostly apartments. Ideally we're looking for something in Carrboro, not farther out.

Thanks for all the help so far...

Tyler's Taproom in carrboro has very good food (especially the garlic fries) and a great selection of beers.

i've got a buddy whose mom is a realtor down there, PM me if you still need help. i grew up there and still love it.

if you do go further out from carrboro, the best places to look are west of carrboro out on NC54, and south towards pittsboro along smith level road. decent number of houses for rent, a lot of older neighborhoods, not all the new subdivisions that are springing up. these rentals may be a little trickier to find, i dunno.

if you're used to the DC market you'll be pleasantly surprised by how much space you can get for 1200/mo or so, especially if you go a mile or two out of town in the right direction.

anyone in chapel hill/carrboro remember seeds of sheeba? i heard they got shut down a while back but i used to love that place when i was a kid.

I can't believe that place is still there, I used to play a gig there every week back when it first opened.
