Hero could just as easily be bluffed off of his hand by a weaker hand on the turn or the river because his check behind/flat call looks so weak. For instance, in this hand if villan were to bet 2/3-pot on the river you would probably have to fold this or make a crying call.

I don't mind a chk behind here either sometimes -- it should be part of your game. Not so sure I like it against an unknown -- I like to see how my opponent is playing before doing it.

You get value from mid-pairs and Qx holdings that you often wouldn't if you bet the flop, and you lose the least while folding the winner less often as well.
