Default Problems connecting NEW 22\" lcd to laptop

So the deal is I've had a 17" sony lcd connected to my dell lappy for the past year or so and today i upgraded to the 22" acer AL2216W

I hooked the screen up the the lappy and the lappy regognises the screen has been connected.

BUT, when i make it my secondary monitor i get the "No signal" even though my laptop thinks that is it working and the mouse CAN be moved into the vacant black area on the 2nd screen

I spoke to the dell guy for over an hour today trying to sort this out, we've established that the screen is fine (worked on other computers as primary monitor). That my hardware is fine, 256mb x1400 gfx card.

He's meant to be calling me back tomorrow with further suggestions and help but i figure you guys may be able to help me out better than he did

I mentioned this, after i've done this my laptop 'thinks' there is a screen, but the LCD says "No Signal"

On the screen itself? I was using my old 17" using VGA and this one has been connected via both VGA's.
How to check whether or not the 22" is set to VGA?

you might try dropping the resolution down to the minimum it can be for the second monitor and give it another go. it is possible that your new monitor doesnt support whatever resolution you were using previously or it doesnt like something about the way your video card is outputting the signal.

if that works, just climb your way up the resolution ladder.

if you're really brave, you might try messing with refresh rates. just check the documentation on the monitor to find the suggested refresh rate and set it to that manually in the advanced section under monitor, you might also have to uncheck the hide modes that this monitor cant display as sometimes, windows isnt that smooth at detecting what is up.

Restarting your laptop after setting up the new monitor accordingly doesn't help either?
