this backstory has got to be pretty good.
in general i think throwing it to your roommate's friends, especially if they are neighbors, is just asking for some awkward [censored].

i've been a cat sitter before, my sister has, and my mother has done this as well. (mom did it for free)
my aunt has both come to my house to cat sit daily for a week+ and also taken our cat in and let it stay in one of her spare rooms (both free)

Before you finalize your decision:
When I was introduced to her at the bar that night, the conversation turned to jobs/major, and I mentioned that I originally wanted to be an actuary (majored in Actuarial Science). She replies "Oh, like working with birds". I say "No, you're thinking of aviary". She replies "No, I'm pretty sure actuary has something to do with birds." In summation, I'm not sure I'd trust this girl to pick up my newspaper, much less cater to my beloved pet.
