Book spoiler: Something similar happened at the end of the third Dexter book, w/ Cody killing the villain to save Dex

They have been known to take an idea here and there from the book even though the main plots have diverged, which is why I think it's possible.

Dexter emphasized that rule number one was self preservation this episode. I feel that is foreshadowing that he will have an opening in Harrys code to kill Doakes.

[/ QUOTE ] this is what I came in to say. He asks dexter the #1 rule and dexter says make sure they deserve it. He says no dont get caught. So theyre making it known that he can kill if it keeps him from getting caught LDO. I dont see any other reason to have that scene?

They had that scene so that Dexter would go to work instead of disposing of Jimenez/leading the Feds to the Everglades.

Maybe I am wrong, but didn't he have that flashback at the stop sign when he was about to go to the cabin.
