Question for those of you who are "math inclined"...would it make sense for the guy in 5th place to "fall back" on the FTP rules for the site going down and take that payout (his share of the remaining pot based on current chip counts I guess) than it would for him to play it out?

Generally no, the short stack usually gets screwed in multi-way chip chops. I guess if he thought he had a significant skill disadvantage it may be ok, but not normally.

Assuming absolutely no skill difference between the 5 people left, and assuming they are each convinced that they will bust in the order of the chip count, it would make sense for the bottom three people to take the payout based on chip counts. The top two should fight it tooth & nail.

Tory, I have no idea why the table you posted makes any difference in this spot.

Here's an ICM calculation from the chillin411 ICM calculator...

Player Name
Chips
ICM Equity
92,890.7419
1st: 0.3202nd: 0.2683rd: 0.2094th: 0.1405th: 0.064
80,577.7399
1st: 0.2202nd: 0.2263rd: 0.2244th: 0.1995th: 0.131
80,133.9493
1st: 0.2172nd: 0.2243rd: 0.2234th: 0.2015th: 0.134
67,329.2625
1st: 0.1402nd: 0.1603rd: 0.1904th: 0.2415th: 0.270
59,730.3065
1st: 0.1032nd: 0.1233rd: 0.1544th: 0.2185th: 0.402

so if I was one of these guys...

If i was 4th or 5th I would play it out because the extra $5k is not THAT much of a difference to me and with one double up I am 2nd in chips. But if Im sitting in 3rd...i might be inclined to say "rules are rules, chop it up".

If you go with my (bad) assumption that the players are 100% convinced that they'll finish in that order, yes.

But Dunk is right - you have to consider the full ICM equity calculation. (here it is again, a little clearer):

$92,890.7419--1st: 0.320--2nd: 0.268--3rd: 0.209--4th: 0.140--5th: 0.064
$80,577.7399--1st: 0.220--2nd: 0.226--3rd: 0.224--4th: 0.199--5th: 0.131
$80,133.9493--1st: 0.217--2nd: 0.224--3rd: 0.223--4th: 0.201--5th: 0.134
$67,329.2625--1st: 0.140--2nd: 0.160--3rd: 0.190--4th: 0.241--5th: 0.270
$59,730.3065--1st: 0.103--2nd: 0.123--3rd: 0.154--4th: 0.218--5th: 0.402

This table basically calculates the odds of finishing place based on current chips, and then calculates the equity based on the prize pool.

As you can see, if the pool was divided based on straight chip %, 5th place would be given $39k, but his equity is $59k right now.
