Not true. In "Guts", everyone looks at their initial cards and decides whether they want to play their hand. If so, you put a chip in your hand, if not, you keep your hand empty. Then everyone counts to 3 and opens their hand together. Those who play show their cards and the winner gets paid. This whole process is usually accompanied by lots of screaming, yelling, trash-talking, and general questioning of each other's manhood.

But there are hand rankings and money involved, so some call it "poker".

You ahve to play with an ante.


People who choose to play their hand do so to contest who wins the antes, but if you choose to play and lose, you have to put double the pot in for the next round.

If the hand is contested by one person only, they take the antes and everyone re-antes.

In my area we play a version of Guts called "Buckeye Guts" where you get dealt 4 cards instead of 3. Since its "Buckeye Guts" the 10's are wild (Big 10). Once everyone decides to drop or fold, you get dealt one more card to make a 5 card legit poker hand. On top of beating all other players theres also a Dummy Hand you have to beat. If you can't beat the dummy hand you have to match the pot.
Also, you have to use antes. Otherwise there wouldn't be degenerate pots that cause people to start sweating over.
