I would rather have someone walk up to me and call me a [censored] piece of [censored] then have them call me "chief" or "boss."

I think its because if they insult me directly I can say something back, whereas if they call me "boss" it just slips by.

This weird?

Yes this is weird. Most people like to be referred to by belittling nicknames. I actually like it when people call me "sport". Probably the most enjoyable, however, is going on job interviews and having them refer to you as "kid".
