Chavez is not a dictator.

I don't support Chavez and his policies, but the amount of blatantly false propaganda that is spread about him and the Venezuelan government is dumbfounding.

When you see how far people go to accuse Bush and his administration of being dictators or abusing the patriot act end freedom of speech and such it isnt surprising that Chavez who by all means have a lot ore personal power than Bush has is seen by many as a dictator.

I find it surprising when people call Bush a dictator, as that statement is both false and stupid. Even so, the name-calling in regard to Chavez is different. The mass-media often/typically refers to Chavez as a dictator, but I don't know of any journalists that refer to Bush as a dictator rather than President. (I'm sure there's at least one Olberman-style hack out there who does, but my point should be clear).

Since there is so much misinformation out there about Chavez, I think it is important to call out those who seek to blatantly spread propaganda against him and the government of Venezuela.

Ok, my answer was based on the fact that you were surprised that annoyed when someone on this forum referred to Chavez as dictator. On forums like these you see that all the time, I dont know how many times Ive seen the Bush=Hitler comparison on various forums, and yes it grows old pretty fast. One argument many conspiracy theorists make for calling Bush dictator is that they believe that Bush would somehow change the laws to ensure himself a 3rd term, something that obviously will not happen. Chavez on the other hand have already done this, or is trying to do so.

Of course no serious journalist in the US will call Bush a dictator, thats pretty obvious. But some might refer to Chavez as one, which might not be totally warranted, but have some validity due to the amount of presidential power he has ensured during his presidency, coupled with a silencing of the opposition and restrictions of the freedom of speech.

I bet Chavez is treated more fairly by American media than Bush is by the Venezuelan media, but Im not saying that justifies calling Chavez a dictotor though. But then again Im not sure what to refer to him as, he might not be a dictator, but neither is he filling the role of a president the way we are used to from a president.

Since I rarely read forums like this one then I'll defer to your judgment. BTW, the reason I don't read forums like this one is because posters seem more interested in proselytizing and propagandizing for their own viewpoints rather than engaging in constructive discussion. The rare posts I make here are usually calling someone out for this.

If you just ignore the ignorants you will find that there is a number of posters on this politics forum that actually is quite serious and have a quite impressive level of understanding of politics and theories that goes well beyond what you typically experience.

My feeling about discussing politics on internet forums used to be pretty similar to your, mostly because I used to visit Norwegian forums where there is mostly poo flinging and people compete about who can make the most bizarrely ridiculous accusations against the US.

Calling people out for being wrong is more than welcome, and if you know more about the situation in Venezuale than the average person you can probably clarify the situation for some people.

The power of direct rule is part of the constitution, it's been used before by him and others, the measures he passed can still be vetoed by parliament or by a referendum, which can be triggered by collecting a certain number of signatures.
