Default Venetian Grand Opening

Well i wish them luck, but tonight seemed like a bit of a mess.

They advertised a 9PM opening to the general public, there werer signs throught the casino which said the room opened at 9PM (or maybe 9:30 I don't remember).

I arrive at about 9:30 and the room has a huge mob around it. The room is roped off and they are not letting the general public in, only those who had invites are allowed in. Walk around a bit and wait. After a while I speak to someone I know who works in the casino (not in the poker room) he makes a call and tells me they will be letting the general public in at Midnight. I ask him about why all the signs say opening at 9PM. He makes another call and this time is told that they will let the general public in when the crowd subsides . . . (ie they will let the general public in only when the general public has walked away because they are tired of waiting). AT one entrance the security guard is telling people that if they want to get their name on the waiting list they can do so at the other entrance (but at the other entrance they are not letting people in to go to the podium.

The room is a nice room, but quite honestly it strcuk me as just beinga poker room with expensive decorations. Thats nota bad thing, but quite honestly that doesn't make my poker playing experience any better.

I did not get into a game as I had to be leaving anyway. but the impression I had was that they did not have their act together. There seemed to be more floorpeople than dealers (ok slight exaggeration) but there seemed to be little coordination. I definately got a chicken without ahead feeling in the room.

On one hand that is understandable since the room just opened, but on the other hand they have had a lot of time to plan for this event. I hope that the day to day operations run a lot smoother than this did. I would like to see the room succeed, but yet I have the nagging feeling that the today was a reflection of larger organizational issues.

Several of my acquaintances are down there right now. I will never understand the urge to rush to a new poker room on opening night and stand around in huge mobs waiting for hours to get into games against the type of people who mark down new poker room openings on their calendars.

Actually i never intended to play. I am a chip collector and wanted to pick up some chips while they are still in new condition.

I didn't mean you specifically, just people (such as the aforementioned acquaintances) in general. The room will be there tomorrow and the next day, why fight crowds, opening-night lists and (possibly) tougher competition? I just don't get it, but these openings are swamped every time.

Why do people wait in line for hours to see a movie on opening day?

A. They have no life.
B. They are nuts.
C. Both A & B.

Yes and no.

The current poker management group only really came together in the past 2-3 weeks, if that (Kathy Raymond, for example, only did show up in the past week and a half), after Edna and Doug took the MGM money and ran (for lack of a better phrase), so things were hectic and lots of final planning was going down this week at a break-neck speed, including whether to do the tourney at 9 and THEN open up the room or have the tourney earlier and then open up the room at 9. Why they went the 2nd direction I dunno. Things will smooth themselves out in the next week and we'll be running a tight ship.

The other thing was the mob of people that packed the room right away... I came in around 2ish and was surprised that there were 15-20 tables going, considering how slow rooms usually start out. I consider that a good sign for the room.

And the $4 rake chips look cool.

Why would You open on a Sunday Night at 9 PM?
I would have an invited opening of just Hotel guests on a Friday night, then a ceremony Sat. afternoon, then a rocking Sat. night and Sunday. Then You have the next week to iron out the bugs.

I agree, I would open on a Wed or Thurs night however. Have everything full speed by weekend.

We did ask why we weren't opening on a Thursday night or such early in the week and were just told "Sunday Night at 9 PM" in a voice that suggested "Yeah, I know, but that's just how they want to do it. I can't get into it."

So... Sunday at 9 didn't seem too popular, but that's just how Venetian wanted to do it.
