Alexander\'s Steakhouse, Cupertino, CA
Quick review...we're not balla, so it was just a basic meal.
My wife and I went here on Halloween night in lieu of handing out candy. We really liked the interior of the restaurant. The furnishings are very simple, and it's not too dark like a lot of steakhouses are. It wasn't super busy, but we liked the fact it was pretty quiet. We went wine-free this meal, and just split a bottle of sparkling water. Three breads were served in a round wire basket. A wheat bread with nuts, a sourdough round, and a crisp with parmesan cheese baked on. All were very good, but the less you have, the happier you'll be later. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] Appetizer: Tataki of Beef Seared filet, thinly sliced, and served over a bed of chopped shiitakes, sliced avocado, and ground radish, with ponzu sauce. We'd only had this dish made with albacore at sushi restaurants, so the beef made it very interesting. The dish is also pretty large, and a single person could probably have this with a salad and call it a night (but you're out for steak, so why would you do that?) Entrees: 28-day Dry Aged New York with shiitake duxelle Dry Aged T-Bone with candied bacon and sweet garlic cloves Both steaks medium rare, and both delicious. They were both cooked to perfection, and the dry aging really made a difference over other non-dry-aged steaks we'd ordered in the past. The filet portion of the T-bone could literally be cut with a fork. The accompaniements were very tasty, and thankfully, the bacon did not overpower the steak. Sides: Thumb potatoes with brie - The potatoes were quite good, but the brie was a little heavy. It got sticky pretty fast. Creamed spinach with feta and filo. The filo "threads" on top were a nice touch, and the spinach was a very good consistency. Dessert: "Chocolate" The chocolate crunch cake was very flavorful, and not too sweet. Of note was the chocolate sorbet, which was infused with black pepper (a first for both of us). The cool iciness was nicely offset by the pepper as soon as it hit the back of the mouth. "Devilish" A wonderful chocoloate covered chocolate cheesecake, served with a small dollop of chocolate ice cream, and three hand-rolled chocolate truffles. It was almost too much, from a richness/sugar perspective, and either dessert could have easily been split by two people (but you're out for steak, so why would you do that?) Our server was very attentive, and the pacing of the meal was terrific. No crumbs on the table between courses, and leftovers were boxed up in separate containers. Overall, it was one of the best meals we've ever had, and we will definitely be back!

Damn OT, that sounds great. We'll check it out for sure. ...well...except for that whole 'black pepper in the chocolate' thing. WTF's up with that??

What I'd like to see is a compare/contrast with A.P. Stump's in San Jose. I haven't been to Alexander's, only heard that it's overrated, but Stump's is a very very good steakhouse.
