Just because you are a bad parent........

My daughters (13 & 9) can easily name at least 20 Beatles songs each. For some reason my youngest's current favorite Beatles tune is Maxwell's Silver Hammer (gonna have to watch that one closely.)

In the last 2 months my oldest has asked if she could load Journey, Styx, Queen, Kansas, The Who and one Maiden song on her iPod. Kids are curious and they will find music that they enjoy, not matter what the.

nyc,

U2 seems like a really good one. Nirvana as well. I dunno about the Chili Peppers. If Nirvana is listened to, I bet the Foo Fighters will also be listened to. Jane's Addiction for a few reasons I think has a pretty decent chance of being listened to in the way that certain not huge but "significant" punk bands are listened to today. More later.

Hmmm, this is prob more interesting w/ answers of bands started in say the last five years, since my answers and some others in the thread have stood the test of time for at least the first step.

It is more interesting but would definitely become a guessing game. Maybe a band like Coldplay although they've probably been in the mainstream for 5-6 years now. I think Jack White is another one who could go a long way - depending on what direction he takes with his music.

huh

if the current trend of many people listening to obscure bands because it's THEIR obscure band continues then there's really no way to predict what of today's music is gonna be listened to in 30-40 years. I really don't know how common this trend is but it's extremely common on OOT.

man,

"offshoot" bands that involve members of "flagship" or "notable" bands of a generation/era/genre often get much more attention than they otherwise would.

I agree. I really don't think Foo Fighters are much more than a mediocre rock band. Nothing special at all.

Besides simply "is the music good?" I think other relevant factors include
-Was the band influential? (eg, Nirvana vs the Screaming Trees)
-How deep is their catalogue?
-Will advances in musical technology make them sound dated? (eg, synth music from the 80s)

I think the jury is out. Of the bands you listed, I would put my money on Bright Eyes being the most prolific - although I haven't listened to the go team.
