I dont understand why we bet on the river. Surely his betting range if we check to him is wider than his calling range if we take the initiative? This is something I need help understanding.

On the flop villain is likely to have something like Qx/Jx/fd or maybe Tx, on the river these hands often have become 2-pair or straights. Villain is loose so he'll probably call a smallish bet with two pair or even Qx, while there are 4 to a straight out and the fd is completed so he's unlikely to v-bet 2-pairs. There's not many hands he can bluff with since most draws hit, so he need to be capable of turning made hands such as Jx/Tx into a bluffs and there's not many of those combos not having 2-pair or a straight on the river.
