Thanks for the replies. I'll make sure to post a follow-up.

I think Shady Grove is right next to my hotel, so that may be the choice for dinner. I'm also having lunch with a client on Wednesday, so I'm sure they'll take me somewhere good.

The Salt Lick sounds ideal, but I might save that for SXSW next year.

As for live music, I may find a local paper and do MySpace searches, etc. and see if I can find something good. Blues, indie or southern rock would all be cool.

Tuesday night @ the Continental Club - Barfield The Tyrant of Texas Funk super high energy live show

Tuesday night @ Antone's Malford Milligan - Blue Tuesday

I have seen both of these guys multiple times, and I think you'll be pleased with either one. For that mattter check out Malford and then head down Congress to go see the Tyrant.

Music clips on both websites.

I still can't believe Liberty Lunch is gone, I spent like half my college nights there.

You can always get a great hamburger at Dirty Martins (Dirty's). I always end up going there when I am in Austin b/c it was one of my Dad's haunts in college.

If you have a rental car, it will help. If not, you will be limited to downtown.

Best Austin places to eat.
Shady Grove, Chuy's, Threadgills, Iron Works BBQ.

Going to 6th street on Thursday night is the best night. So many people come out

Plenty of live music at all the downtown clubs.
You can go hiking at one of the near by parks.
Zilker park is a great area, plus there is the Barton Springs pool.

Austin is the oasis of Texas.

Alot of good Austin advice in this thread. I think a good plan sounds like:

Dinner: Hula Hut or Shady Grove.
Music: Malford Milligan sounds about your speed. Antone's is a good place.

If you are there for an afternoon definately check out Barton Springs for a swim. God I miss Austin. I also spent many nights at Liberty Lunch. RIP.

I'm working at the moment so I'll post a more detailed TR later today.

I went to Shady Grove for a green chili cheeseburger that lived up to the hype. I then hit 6th Street and the Warehouse District (including Antones). I preferred the Warehouse District, but based on a sample size of one night (a Tuesday no less).

Any lunch recommendations?

Edit: Never mind, plenty of recommendations in this thread for me to find a place for lunch.

I'm glad Shady Grove did not disappoint. I wanted to go there last night to celebrate a friend getting a new job. Problem is she eats like a 8 year old, so we went to Olive Garden instead, where she got pasta and plain red sauce.

Again, I think Rudy's is a solid lunch spot. The lines may look long, but they move fast. Make sure you let them know you haven't been there before and they'll give you samples.
