Re: What current music will still be listened to in 30-40 years?
If they are obscure now, nothing is going to change 30 or 40 yars from now.

Re: What current music will still be listened to in 30-40 years?
I really think R.E.M. is at the top of this list, and I'm not trying to be biased (because I like them a lot).
The reason I say this is that when Dominic did his "best songs of the '80s" thread, he totally forgot R.E.M. -- why? Because when you think '80s you don't think REM. They transcend the time period. Likewise, you don't think of them as '90s music or '00s music. They've never sounded like a fad or a trend. They have this weird timeless quality... like, listen to "Gardening At Night" or "Country Feedback" and try to figure out what year -- hell, what decade -- the song was written in. In the way we're still listening to the Beatles, the Stones, and Phil Spector, we'll be listening to R.E.M. late into the 21st century and they will always be fresh and interesting. |

Any band/musician with a lot of hits and albums will be listened too, no matter how trite or bad you personally think they are now.

Re: What current music will still be listened to in 30-40 years?
Good music never dies.
There's music that has lived hundreds of years and people still love it. Overall metal music has the best chance as metalheads in general are enthusiastic about their music and a big percentage will eventually find older bands. Metallica and Slayer made their best albums 20 years ago and young metalheads today are still blown away by those. Their current (=everything they've released in the last 15 years) albums won't last long, but after 30-40 years people will still listen to their classic albums. There's so much metal out now that it's impossible to tell which bands/albums will last for decades, but it's obvious there will be some. Of course some of the rock/pop bands are going to last, but most people are happy with what's currently at the charts and never bother to dig deeper. RHCP has huge fanbase right now, but the chances are they won't last 40 years unless Kiedis dies in a bizarre accident pretty soon. They've had tons of hits in the past years, but I don't think they've written anything timeless besides "Under The Bridge". U2 probably has a better chance in a last longer. Kurt Cobain's suicide will keep the grunge flame alive forever. I don't think the music alone could've done that, but now it's clear that after 40 years there will be teenage girls with Cobain posters on their walls. Gary Moore is a safe bet. His stuff won't go anywhere. Any good blues/jazz song written today has a good chance to be around after 40 years. Don't follow that much current classical, so don't know if there's any living composer writing music that will last (there's probably something out there but I just haven't heard it). Shostakovich died over 30 years ago, but I guess we can still call him current as most well known classical music is 200 years old. Right now he's not a household name like Beethoven or Bach, but I think there's a good chance that in 100-200 years he'll be up there as well. |

Re: What current music will still be listened to in 30-40 years?
I predict that the current rap trends will continue and in 30-40 years we will be listening to such rap mega-hits as
"Twist your arm 90 degrees, then wiggle" "Cross your arms and shrug" "Yawn and blink" "Miss Mary Mack (Is a Fine Ass Ho)" "Jack and Jill (Bonnie & Clyde 2040)" As for current groups/artists that have recently emerged (I think you can say Metallica and Nirvana have already been around for long enough to not make these interesting picks) If I had to pick one modern group that will be around, I'm kinding feeling the White Stripes. |

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned how infectious pop hits still get played decades later. I'm sure our kids/grandkids will be familiar Britney Spears and the Macarena.
