I think for most people, it is the idea that you can get rich by watching sports ZOMG!!! All you have to do is be a little bit better than 50% at picking games. We may not be that good now (although most of us believe we are) but if we just correct the mistakes we keep making, we'll have it made.

because I have an unhealthy addiction to watching certain sports. I might as well make some money while doing it.

My main reason for betting sports is recreational. It makes the random morning games between teams that are going to finish 3-9 and 4-8 a lot more entertaining having a couple hundred bucks riding. Being right is fun too. I do well enough to make a little money, but not anywhere near enough for it to be a significant portion of my income.

Warning: brag below, apologizing in advance...

So in April I bought some future bets on the Diamondbacks to win the NL West. I use WSEX so I bought a few of those Live Bets Long Term Market shares. When I saw Arizona had a fighting chance this past August, I put in some more, and as of now I have 15 shares which in total cost about $450.

With Arizona having a 3.5 game lead now, I have the option for selling these shares for the total prize of $1,020. I can also wait and cash them in for $1,500 if they win their division, or $0 if they don't. Any advice? I know their record according to run differential should be somewhere below .500 which means luck is present in spades here, but with the Padres 20 games in 20 days and the Backs playing basically the same teams as SD, they look like they can hold them off.
