Default New to Omaha - a few questions. Thanks.

I was at Bally's in Atlantic City on Thursday - and found a 5/10 game of Omaha high going on. First time at that casino. Monday (yesterday) they had a 3/6 game for a while.

I've been playing stud and Hold 'em, but could clearly use some Omaha advice.

What is a good book (I have the Super System ones) on Omaha high?

What is a good list of starting hands?

Should hands like A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 10 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 7 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]6 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] be played? Or am I too loose in opening these?

Seems like I got rivered a lot - is that normal in Omaha? Moreso, I mean, than in stud and Hold 'em? Or a sign that I'm chasing too many hands?

What is generally a winning hand in this game? I mean, does a good 2 pair often win? Or does one need (it seems like it to me, based on very limited experience) a straight or better?

So many questions!

Thanks in advance for the advice. Anything you can give in the way of help would be appreciated.

Lee

rolf slotbooms book is good i think it is called "secrets of pot limit omaha". i would play that hand on the button and cutoff if no raises. get rivered a lot because the your opponents amost always have the draws covered. if a draw hit someone probably has it. try to play hands that can hit the nuts and have strong draw possibilites.

This is a decent hand. You have straight and nut flush possibilities.

AAKK double suited and AAJT double suited are the best hands, but you won't be seeing those often.

If possible, you would like to get most/all of your chips in preflop with AAXX, but if this is not possible you may want to disguise your hand by just calling someone else's raise. A reraise if almost always viewed as AAXX and it is easier to play against a pegged AAXX.

Also, position is huge in pot-limit omaha, much less so in limit omaha.

If you got rivered, then how could you be chasing too many hands? But yes, when you have 36/52 cards out preflop (in a 9-handed game) you will see a lot more suckouts.

It depends on the board, the action and the number of players in the hand. In general, two pair is not a hand you want to get a lot of chips in the middle with unless you have back up straight and/or flush draws.

I have to disagree about two pair when it is the Top two pair. It is highly unlikely that your opponent will have top or middle set if you have the top two pair. It is dangerious if you op will call down with bottom set like 4s or the board is coordinated and you have nothing else going. Multi-way, you would still like to keep the pot small and get to the showdown cheap. You can take a good bit of change from people calling with straight and flush draws that don't make it.

Unlike holdem, 8 out straight draw are nothing to get excited about, especially if the flop is 2 flushed. Wait for a 13 out wrap on a rainbow flop or go slow until you see what the turn will bring.

You will be somewhat suprised at how many times your Full loses to Quads or your nut flush loses to a straight flush, but unless you are very, very deep, push them anyway because they are still +EV.

AsTs7h6h or similar are pretty valuable hands in live play omaha in my opinion, so long as you don't overplay the heart-flush aspect of this holding. Your T-7-6 combinations should be played for straights.

As far as getting rivered, expect a lot of bad playing when you're playing live, and thus plenty of suckouts. Variance will be high, but is to your benefit.

By the river, big two pair will not usually be good, and if it is, it will be the result of several draws whiffing, in which case you usually aren't making anything on the riv anyway.
