when a price pool for a tourney becomes bigger then originally announced because more players registered in it then expected.
That's for cash tourneys but I think it's pretty much the same with sats...

i thought overlays were when the site guarantees a certain amount of money in the prize pool, but not enough people register to cover that guarantee, and the site has to dish out some money on its own

example, stars sunday million, 4500 people register. the prize pool is guaranteed to be at least 1 million, so stars has to fork up the extra 100 grand

in the main example, i figure it was:

an extra 56000 to be spread across people who play (since it's a freeroll so = no money required)....

meaning 56,000 + 9 packages to be spread amongst those who play?

Yes.

Also sometimes money is added to the prizepool by the site/cardroom. This money counts as an overlay as well.
