On a more serious note, I think it may be with the whole Giambi/Phelps/Miezckykcizewicz situation - the Yankees perhaps hoped that Giambi could play ~30 games as a 1B, but it didn't work out that way. Still, Cashman has to know that there are probably 10 guys in the minors who can outhit Mzzkwizkwicz enough to make up for possible deficiencies in the field.
