I have a question for Jared:

when the Pittsburg left happens, do all the cars turning left go before the cars going straight, or just the first one in line?

also, I'm going to drink a Guinness right now if I have any left.

*edit, I have no Guinness here.

[/ QUOTE ]

Usually just the first and MAYBE the second car.

Yeah that. You don't see the second car very often at all.

Yeah that. You don't see the second car until it's too late.

p.s.: Why don't you just say "turn left at the next intersection"?
Too easy?

"Intersection" isn't as commonly used in English as it is in American. We'd say "take the next left", or "go left at the lights", sometimes "go left at the crossroads" (crossroads is our normal word for intersections of two roads), and if you're on foot, maybe "go left at the crossing".

I was thinking about the Pittsburgh left. In Queensland, we have something similar. You don't give way to traffic going straight on, but you are supposed to give way to the right, unless signs state otherwise. It's the opposite to the rule in the UK, and almost universally ignored in Brisbane and the rest of the southeast, but apparently observed at unmarked junctions in the rural areas. Hilariously, at some junctions in Melbourne, you turn right from the furthest left lane in a "hook turn" (that's like going left from the furthest right for Americans). It actually works, but no one knows how. Maybe magic.

For the record, here's how two way stops (cars facing eachother) work here.
1) yield to traffic with no stop signs
2) going straight > going right > going left (two left turns at the same time in front of eachother ldo)
