Default GMs vote in favor of instant replay on home run calls

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3096923

[ QUOTE ]
The proposal, approved by a 25-5 vote, was limited to boundary calls -- whether potential home runs are fair or foul, whether balls go over fences or hit the tops and bounce back, and whether fans interfere with possible homers.

...

Solomon said the next step will be to speak with commissioner Bud Selig, who opposes the use of replays but said last month he was willing to let GMs examine the issue. If Selig gives the go-ahead, Solomon and staff in the commissioner's office would draft a detailed replay proposal that GMs could vote on when they gather next month at the winter meetings in Nashville, Tenn.

Thoughts?

Step 1 in the (appropriate and good) phasing out of umpires in MLB.

Be pretty simple to automate fair/foul calls. Less simple to automate balls/strikes. Less simple to automate safe/out.

Just a matter of time though imo.

Very much for the good of the game - eliminating any bias and/or potential ref-related scandals (point shaving, match fixing).

i would just like to say that this should speed up the game not slow it down. the time it takes for someone upstairs to look at a video and walkie talkie the correct call is a lot shorter than the time it takes managers to whine about the calls.

its not football where u have to look at something frame by frame 8 different times from three different angles and then ponder obscure rules.

This is one instance where I'm OK with IR in baseball.

Did you happen to see the replay of Manny's HR/single at Jacobs in the ALCS?

I bet if we could guess 7 names that we'd get the 5 GM's that voted this way.
