also, what exactly is "the nut" or "nuts"?

Often used by posters claiming superiority without having to say anything of actual value.

The nuts is the best possible poker hand in a given situation. If a Hold'em board is As 3c 8h 9d Kd, the nuts is 3 of a kind (aces) because no flush, straight, 4 of a kind, or full house is possible.
