Default Pot Control - How it relates to this hand

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.25 BB (5 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: 2+2 Forums)

MP ($36.15)
Button ($11.05)
SB ($24.75)
Hero ($27.65)
UTG ($2.85)

Preflop: Hero is BB with 7[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].
3 folds, SB raises to $0.5, Hero raises to $2, SB calls $1.50.

I 3bet because he min-raised, and i had position on him with a decent hand

Flop: ($4) 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 2[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB bets $1.75, Hero calls $1.75.

I decided to call here with TP, i didnt want to raise b/c of pot control

Turn: ($7.50) J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB bets $1.75, Hero calls $1.75.

he bets the same amount again, i decide to call and push him off his pocket pair

River: ($11) Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $8

What exactly is pot control, and how is it applied in this situation?

Pot control is for keeping a pot small with a made hand vs an opponent's made hand when you are not sure if your hand is good, but you want to get to showdown with it as cheap as possible.

AT on Axx flop pot control is good because you may be behind, but you may be good and you'd like to find out without putting your stack at risk, so keep pot small. In the hand posted, pot control does not apply. Hand is vulnerable. Need to raise to protect it. You don't want villain to draw to overcards for free. And 3/4psb on river is the opposite of pot control.

So, part of your question, especially here on the flop is "do you want to showdown your hand?"
