Obviously you owe him a new one. Otherwise you are massively increasing the chances that he ends up with a corked bottle.

Let's say a bottle is corked 10% of the time. Then 10% of the time you don't buy him a new one, and 90% of the time you do. Of those 90%, the new bottle will be corked 10% of the time. So overall, the number of bottles that he loses to cork taint will rise from 10% to 19%. Not a good deal.
