Re: My laptop was dropped one too many times - need data off it though
[ QUOTE ]
You put your drive in that. You hook a usb cable from that device to your new computer. It shows up as a second drive inside that OS. You can then copy the files to your new computer. [/ QUOTE ] Ok, thanks! So I'm taking the HD out of my laptop, (This should be ok, because it's already broken ) then hook it up to the new laptop and I'll be able to see files on the old HD. I think I get it. -Craig |

exactly. Then you grab your my documents files and your pt database and of course all that porn you downloaded and pull it to the new computer.
Then delete everything from the usb drive or format it and use it to backup your files so the next time you drop your laptop its not that big a deal. |

Re: My laptop was dropped one too many times - need data off it though
yes, as long as the hard drive itself is still working. Go by frys and pick up one of those usb 2.0 enclosures for 2.5 inch drives and put it in. You should then be able to put it on any computer that has a usb slot and see the files on the drive. Then you just have to find what your looking to copy

If you have a local computer store they most definatly will have a laptop to full size hard drive converter for a few bucks. Plug it in with computer turned off! Windows will recognize the drive and you can copy from there. Turn system off, remove drive.

Re: My laptop was dropped one too many times - need data off it though
if he is getting another laptop he is better off getting the usb enclosure. besides the usb one is about $25 around here and the 2.5 adapter is $12.99. With the adapter you can only hook it to the ide bus so its no use with another laptop.
