The NCAA Division I Women's and Men's Basketball Committees released the first official Ratings Percentage Indexes (RPI) today. Through the end of the regular season, the updated RPI rankings will be found at www.ncaasports.com. The first official RPI rankings include all games played through Monday, January 30. With cooperation from NCAA Division I membership, the committees also announced that the weekly release of the RPI will be posted every Wednesday by 5 p.m., a one-day improvement over the original plan. The official RPI is used as one of many tools to select teams to participate in the championships. Developed in 1981, the RPI provides supplemental data in the evaluation of teams for at-large selection and seeding of the championship bracket is only one of many pieces of information available to the committees. Qualitative factors such as games missed by student-athletes or coaches and a team's performance in the latter portion of the season cannot be reliably measured by a statistical model. However, such factors are among the details of each team considered by the committees. The men's tournament field will be announced at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 12. The women's tournament field will be announced at 7 p.m., Monday, March 13. [/ QUOTE ] link |

the RPI is very flawed...as an Arizona fan, i can say without a doubt that they are far from the 16th best team in the nation.
that said however, i like how they are at least attempting to factor strength of schedule in. the cats could miss the tournament this year, which would be a shame considering the brutal schedule they have played. god damn i love college basketball this time of year. can't wait for the tournament. |

the rpi is awful
compare it to the other 20+ computer ranking systems and almost everyone of the others seems to make more sense |

That only includes games through Monday. UConn is up to 5 with Tuesday's win against Pitt included.
Also, UConn's strength of schedule is really hurting it in the RPI right now from the five or six really bad teams it played early in the season. That will change a lot with a tough schedule over the next few weeks: 02/04 at #21 Indiana 02/08 Syracuse 02/11 at S Hall 02/13 at #4 Villanova 02/18 at #11 W Virginia 02/21 N Dame 02/26 #4 Villanova If Uconn had played Arkansas State (197) and Ball State (199) instead of Army (327) and Morehead State (326), things would look much different, which makes me wonder why we should even care about RPI. Would UConn actually be a better team if it had beaten Arkansas State by 30 instead of Morehead State by 68? |

so, is that supposed to mean something?
UConn always has a lousy RPI. The reason is instead of playing the crappy teams (that most team play) in the beginning of the season, they play the REALLY crappy teams in the beginning of the year. According to the RPI, the difference between playing #1 and #150 is about the same as the difference between playing #150 and #300. Obviously, the difference in expected winning pct is FAR greater with the first one though. UConn wasn't even top 30 RPI before the Big East started. |
