Guys not showing both cards, flipping cards onto community cards.
I was in a home game that just had it's second monthly game.
At showdown, some guys were showing only one card. Some were flipping one or sometimes both of their cards on top of the community cards, presumably to better illustrate which cards matched up to make a hand. I'm new to live poker and it shows because I'm not used to following live action so I don't have the image as an expert at this game. However, I tried saying some things about not doing these practices but with only a little success. The guy running the game is new to poker except for an annual Christmas tournament he ran for friends and family for the last few years. It was my idea to him to run a monthly game because he has the room to do it. I don't like guys flipping their cards around at showdown. What would you do? |

Set the rules before play starts so everyone knows.

Re: Guys not showing both cards, flipping cards onto community cards.
Please correct me if I am wrong about this, but players don't technically have to show both cards at showdown. If player A shows one card and player B mucks (because he cannot beat one pair or whatever), then A gets the pot because B mucked first.
I sometimes have the same problem at my home game. If anyone is in the hand at showdown with me, I ask to see both cards before showing mine (or accepting that they won the hand if I bet last). I also tell some novices to show both cards, just in case they misread their hand and lose because they are donks (but not saying 'donks'). |

But what happens if someone shows one card, the other guy mucks? Doesn't the first guy who mucks forfeit his claim to the pot? |

[/ QUOTE ] Hey Tom, Technically you have a right to see the winning hand and they should be showing both cards (and at a casino it would be mandatory) but you're in a friendly home game so your argument may not have a lot of sway with your fellow players. You should find out their motivation for playing before insisting on following all poker rules to the letter. Lots of home game players just want to hang out with their buds and drink, joke around, and gambool in that order. Since the game is so new and meets so infrequently it might take a few more games before all the players feel comfortable with someone who is more knowledgeable asking for them to play by some of the basic rules. |

Re: Guys not showing both cards, flipping cards onto community cards.
That's pretty common in all the home games I play in. We all know the rules, but really, it isn't a big deal. If someone wants to see both cards, they just say so and its shown. I always show both cards if I'm winning the pot at the showdown, but I also always wait for whoever made the last aggressive action to show first.
Whoever bets last must show first, and show both their cards. |

The guy who mucks forfeits the pot AND his right to see both cards. |

Re: Guys not showing both cards, flipping cards onto community cards.
The seriousness level and amount of rules adhered to in home games varies greatly.
My only concern would be that eventually a dispute will arise because of this since no rules are set, the resolution of the dispute might result in hard feelings. |

My rule is this, show half a hand, win half a pot. Dealer keeps the rest.
