Hard alcoholics actually experience a curve where they build up a tolerance, plateau, and then crash. As they continue drinking, they gain tolerance, but there's a point where the damage they do to the liver outstrips any regenerative effect. The guys on the verge of liver failure get drunk with just a couple drinks because their livers are too damaged to process much of anything. I don't know enough about the physiology to know if reverse tolerance is the point of no return or the point of you're already [censored].
