Default Need new iron set, $300-500 range

I've had the same crappy set of irons for about 8 years now. I hit them OK, but I think its time to move on. My handicap is 12. I am a thin guy 5'11"/160 lbs, but generate good swing speed. Any suggestions for a set of irons? Do I need to get fitted? I've never done that before - so not sure how beneficial that could be.

Thanks!

I was going to make this thread a week ago.. I ended up with Taylormade steel iron set (model name is something like RAC OS2), paid $430ish USD. It was recommended by my teacher, and I think it's a good deal.

I have been thinking about getting the Taylormade Rac HT irons mainly b/c they are only like $300 now. I have had the same crappy set of Ram's for about 4 years now. I have a Taylormade R580 driver and love it so i now like the brand. I shoot around 90...any one know if these clubs will be good for me or if I should just save my money and get a better set?

I tried the RAC's and a couple of other models and ended up with the Cobra S9's. I just hit them with a little draw and longer than the RAC's. I felt like the RAC's punished my off-center hits, while the Cobra's felt nice and I was more confident with the club in my hand. I got mine for 360 shiped off ebay. Hell of a deal.

Got to golfsmith and hit around, you'll be surprised with what you find out there.

Today I purchased a new set of '04 Callaway Stainless Steel Big Bertha Irons (4-PW, AW, SW) for $448.00 from PGA Superstore here in Atlanta. I see that Golfsmith has them for a dollar more.

here's my tip: ebay

If you are 12 hc like me (10), i found no reason to buy brand new clubs. You can get nearly new irons for half the price, therefore you can get much higher end irons in your price range.

I found macgregor forged blades for 300 and they are almost brand new

The type and fit of club is much more important than the name on the club. What are your common swing faults and exactly how much swing speed do you generate?

I'm a 4 handicap and last Fall I got the Cleveland Launcher LPs 4-PW. These irons have sick good feel and I still have the ability to control the shape of my shots with them. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I'm a really bad player (only playing for 6 months) but I just bought a used set of Tommy Armour 855s clubs on ebay for $76. Very good condition for a used set.

Sub,

There's nothing wrong with used clubs, but I can't imagine buying a set off eBay where I can't even swing them beforehand.
