in no way am i saying if hope plays that the us wins or that brazil wasn't the better team, but it also not out of the realm of possibility that a lack of chemistry/practice/game experience together between the defender and the goalkeeper defending corner kicks contributed to that own goal, the slightest bit of tentativeness or uncertainty on either player's part could certainly have been a direct cause in a play like that

and the first goal in soccer is pretty much the definition of huge, it probably has more influence in determining a winner than any other sport

This is 100% the fault of the coach. Put yourself in Solo's shoes. There is no friggin way, at 26 years old, that I would be able to hold my tongue after getting benched in that situation.

When I read reports of him benching her I thought it was the dumbest thing ever. She'd played rather well the whole WC and leading up to it.

Goalkeeping isn't only about making saves. Being athletic and having instincts on the ball are obviously important, but the position is so much more mental. You are essentially the commander on the field, able to see everything in front of you. Most of the time, you come out of a game mentally drained. Setting up your defense, reacting to opposing tactics, etc.

I have no idea how Solo compares to Scurry in these regards, though.
