How did you propose?

I'll be getting engaged somewhat soonish and am stumped for ideas. Guys, how did you do it. Ladies, how were you proposed to. Bonus: Did you ask for her parents' blessing?

I'll go first about ex-wife:

I took her to the fountain at the University of Arizona where we had our first date. I got down on one knee and said something along the lines of, "I don't get to see you often enough to show you how much I love you. I am going to need the rest of my life. Will you marry me?" (Bonus it was in Spanish)

I had not met her dad at this point and did not ask for his blessing.

Wow, I was just about to make this thread. I'd really like to hear people's ideas.

I've already gotten a plan for my girlfriend. She is a runner. I'm going to buy her a pair of new running shoes, pink of course, and offer to put them on her feet. While tying the first shoe I will begin to talk about how shoelaces are really amazing. When they are by themselves they are limp and do nothing, but tie two together and it gains strenght and shape and such. I'll pull out the second shoe with the ring tied into the laces and ask her to "Tie the knot with me". Hopefully she won't figure it out until it's the big moment.

I just proposed in April, but I didn't do anything elaborate. Just got down on one knee before we were going out to a nice dinner.

Definitely ask her father before you propose. It will make him happy and her too. I know it sounds old fashioned, but she was really glad I did it. He was much cooler about the whole thing than I thought. He asked me if I was going to treat her right.

or better yet what gave you the courage to do such a thing?? I just cannot imagine myself ever proposing. Talk about lets say stagefright for example x 100!

Still ask her anyways, but expect to foot the entire bill for the wedding. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] This was a courtesy to her father, he is still waiting for the husband of her older sister to ask.

I have gotten to know her parents pretty well while we have been dating and didn't think it was going to be a problem. I am a software engineer, own my home, and have always treated her right. I look pretty good on paper, as long as you don't include a picture. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] I had my mind made up and this isn't the 1950's, if he says no. That sucks, and the girl and I would need to work that. The last you thing you want is her parents sabotaging your relationship. Get it out into the open right away. Unless you know your her parents absolutely hate you ask him. This is really a special moment for him.
